Why Counselling and Psychotherapy

As a counsellor and psychotherapist my aim is to utilise the interpersonal relationship between the individual/s and myself.

The aim of counselling and / or psychotherapy is to make changes in the individual’s life that will enhance wellbeing. As the individual begins to develop greater understanding and self-awareness, this ultimately leads to self-growth and self-fulfilment.

Although Counselling and Psychotherapy overlap considerably, there are also recognised differences.

Whilst the work of counsellors and psychotherapist may be of considerable depth, the focus of counselling is more likely to be on specific problems, changes in life adjustments, fostering persons’ wellbeing and is a relatively short-term intervention ranging from 1 to 16 sessions.

Psychotherapy is more concerned with the restructuring of the personality or self and the development of insight. As such, my work as a psychotherapist is to help people to become conscious of their experiences that were not previously made aware of. This may require more in-depth work that entails self- exploration, self-understanding, exploration of long standing difficulties, processing a person’s past history and delving into family-of-origin.

I work holistically to process the integration of the self (emotionally, cognitively, behavioural and, relationally). What transpires is a gradual unfolding whereby the individual learns to develop self-awareness, self-understanding and self- comprehension. As the parts of self become more integrated, various areas of change take place.
